Summer project list: Compare HiSET exam and new GED exam. ...Check
I made the chart (Based, on this one, thanks DESE!). And I had a good time with it, I like these tasks. HiSET: 5 tests, GED: 4. GED: Multiple question types. Different costs, different rules for retesting. Similar in x, y, z ways. I even added a timeline (below) to explain the changes.
It's new, still, that Massachusetts is using two different tests to award high school equivalency credentials. This is useful info for our tutors to have.
But, honestly, the most important similarities I see aren't the scheduling or the standards. It's that...
... both tests are hard. They compress years worth of learning into a timed, standardized exam.
... they're gateways and gate keepers to college, training, living wage jobs.
... passing either is a major accomplishment. (Harder, in my humble opinion, that it was for me to earn my own high school diploma)
... and students need our support to get through them. It takes a village.
